Why use First Rate Marine?

We have been designing and installing marine electrical systems per ABYC standards since we started our boat renovations back in 2012. We started full-time cruising in 2016 and founded First Rate Marine to assist cruisers with a variety of projects along the way. We now have over 20 years of combined marine electrical design and installation experience. We currently live and cruise full-time on a sailboat and have been designing and testing these systems in real world scenarios. We are off-grid 99% of the time and not tied to a dock due to our reliable and repairable electrical systems. We work on other vessels "in the field" so our consulting and designs are based on practical installation experience, not just theoretical knowledge.

We are ABYC Members with certifications in Marine Electrical Systems. Our designs adhere to ABYC guidelines and we highlight the key information in our diagrams and related scopes of work. In addition to utilizing the ABYC guidelines, we create design packages that are easy to understand and use by the average "do it yourself" (DIY) boater. We believe every boat owner should fully understand the systems onboard. Our mission is to enable vessel owners to install, troubleshoot and maintain their electrical systems to ensure safety, simplicity and reliability at sea.
We choose only high-quality, marine-grade equipment and materials with vendors and brands that are recognized as the industry-standard. We recommend only quality brands with a high value reputation that have passed the test of time, so you can be confident in the devices selected for your design. We are constantly learning about new device technologies and design techniques to ensure that our designs are innovative and state of the art. If you have a new product that you would like to use for the design, we will review the specifications and provide an evaluation to ensure a good fit for the project.

Want to go cruising right now? The answer is usually yes, for most boaters looking to get out there and live the dream. However, very few start out having all the skills and knowledge to properly outfit their boat to be safe and reliable. Then they decide to just go, and this is a crucial mistake. Your vessel's electrical system is one of the core and most important systems. Sadly, most do not understand them or worse, they were poorly installed and maintained by the previous owner. This can spell potential disaster for you and your crew. How old is your electrical system? When was the last time it was upgraded or even had it inspected? Are you looking to replace all or some of your existing system? Either way you decide to go, we have you covered. We are ready to help you assess, plan and empower you to complete any electrical project standing in the way of your cruising dreams!

Meet the team

We are a team of two meticulous individuals who decided early on in our land careers that we wanted to travel the world extensively.  After much research and discussions based around the most effective and adventurous way to do this long-term, we decided that living on a sailboat could be the answer.   Soon after that decision was made, we began learning to sail and educating ourselves on all things related to traveling by sea – which turns out to be a pretty big list!  After we found the vessel that was right for us, we purchased Soul Rebel, a 37′ Tayana monohull sailboat, built in 1981.  We quickly realized that a 30+ year old boat and its systems needed some serious updating.  We completely removed every piece of plumbing, wiring, rigging, tanks, engine, devices, etc. and started with a blank canvas.  We spent the next 4 years on weekends and using our vacation weeks to renovate her up to our perceived, small-space living standards, sparing no expense on the latest and greatest “marine-grade” materials and equipment.   We achieved this by applying the divide and conquer method of attack, which meant each of us would learn and be the project lead for each of the required areas of expertise.  Currently, we both are competent in all areas related to sailing, cruising, MEP systems, navigation and weather.  Our skillsets overlap and are interchangeable, as required, for traveling safely and reliably at sea.

We are real people that care about others and will be there to assist in any way we can.  We design systems that we currently have (or would like to have) onboard our floating home.   We would never recommend a design or product that we don’t believe in or wouldn’t use ourselves.   Most of our customers that we meet and help along the way become our cruising friends and we always look forward to meeting them at the next remote anchorage for happy hour!  Safe and happy boating, cheers!
