Most boats built in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s will not be up to ABYC safety standards for AC sources, nor will they be outfitted with up-to-date inverters or AC chargers compatible with new lithium batteries.

If not properly maintained and upgraded this system can be extremely hazardous. This was the case when we purchased our current cruising boat, a 1981 Tayana 37.  We noticed that we were getting shocked on the metal surfaces of the boat when plugged into shore power.  Upon further inspection, we found that our shore power inlet was wired with two different-sized wires spiced together with wire nuts!  There was no overcurrent protection, the boat wasn’t up to standards electrically and was supposedly rewired by a professional electrician.

Stories like this aren’t uncommon, unfortunately.  If you would like to have professional help understanding, upgrading, or replacing your AC source equipment and wiring, choose this service group.  We will assist you with:

      • Inverter/Charger selection and sizing based on your desired requirements.
      • Generator selection and sizing.
      • Automatic generator starting.
      • Overcurrent protection, switching selections, wire sizing, and installation recommendations per the ABYC guidelines.
      • Isolation transformers or galvanic isolators.
      • Voltage selection for American boats planning to go to Europe or vice versa.

How to choose a service level:

  • If you have an issue with your AC source wiring or aren’t sure what service level to choose, we recommend starting with Service Level 1: Design Consultation.  During the proposal review meeting, we will review your situation and offer guidance on the best way to take advantage of our services.
  • If you would like professional planning and recommendations on how to add or upgrade the AC power sources on your boat along with a custom wiring diagram and equipment list, choose Service Level 2: Design and Diagrams.
  • If you want us to complete a custom design, wiring diagram, equipment list, and a detailed bill of materials listing exact quantities of wire, connectors, conduits, and enclosures, select Level 3: Design Build Installation.
